There are currently 84 pieces of legislation relating to fire, these are due to be replaced with the Regulatory Reform Order in April 2006. The Fire Precautions Workplace Regulations (1997) replace the original fire certificate scheme and identifies the following areas of responsibility for all businesses:
- Identify & assess the sources of risk and identify who might be at risk
- Prepare a scheme to prevent / control the risk
- Provide and maintain fire precautions
- Appoint a person to be managerially responsible
- Provide information, instruction and training to all employees
- Keep records
If a fire occurs and a risk assessment has not been carried out, your company may face prosecution.
A Fire Risk Assessment involves a trained consultant visiting the premises and carrying out a detailed inspection the building and work processes. A written report is then produced detailing the findings of the assessment, together with recommendations for remedial actions.
