Fire Risk Assessments
In England and Wales, if you are an employer, owner, landlord or occupier of business or other non-domestic premises, you are responsible for the fire safety person.
In England and Wales, if you are an employer, owner, landlord or occupier of business or non-domestic premises, you are responsible for adhering to strict fire safety regulations and penalties are in place for non-compliance.
Under the Fire Safety Order, the ‘responsible person’ has a number of duties to adhere to including; undertake and regularly review fire risk assessments; advise staff and/or their representatives about the risks you’ve identified; put in place, and maintain, adequate and appropriate fire safety measures; plan for an emergency; and to provide fire safety instruction and training.
Local fire and rescue authorities have the power to inspect premises and issue notices advising of recommended changes. If you do not follow the required Fire Safety regulations, you could be fined or even risk a prison sentence.
Fire Risk Assessments are required under the Fire Safety Order
If your business has five or more people you must keep a written record of your fire risk assessment. There are five key steps in carrying out a fire risk assessment:
- Identify the hazards
- Identify people at risk
- Evaluate, remove or reduce the risks
- Record your findings, prepare an emergency plan and provide training
- Review and update the fire risk assessment regularly
